    The Opportunity

    Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, is recruiting for a Scientist  1 (Formulator), located in Rochester, NY. 

    The Responsibilities

    Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, provides in vitro diagnostic products to hospital, commercial and clinical laboratories, and blood donor centers. Its products include reagents and instrument systems used in blood typing and donor testing; clinical chemistry determinations and immunoassays for disease diagnosis and therapy management. 

    The Scientist  1 must work well alone and in a small team environment.  Quality of all Fluids Formulations begins with this team.  The successful candidate will perform various assignments related to the formulation of calibrator/control for the several VITROS analyzer systems in accordance with cGMP regulations.  These assignments include the preparation of complex biological solutions using established protocols. These protocols include weighing chemicals, volumetric additions of various biological components, filtration, ultra-filtration, etc.  This individual also interprets laboratory data to make appropriate adjustments to formulations.  Performs calculations for chemical additions and corrective actions to the various formulations.  Maintains accurate records of work performed in accordance with cGMP.  This includes Device History Records, QC, equipment maintenance, and other associated formulation documentation.  Sets up, operates, and cleans various formulation equipment (large ultra-filtration system, small ultra-filtration system, various filtration trains, centrifuges, pumping equipment, etc) using established protocols.  Maintains analytical equipment related to the formulation area (pH meters, balances, etc) and performs necessary calibration, QC, and documentation.  Cleans and maintains work area and equipment (vessels, impellers, sanitary fittings, etc) using established protocols.  Writes, reviews and modifies SOP's, protocols and other laboratory documents. Maintains a neat, orderly, and safe workplace.  The individual will be assigned a steady shift.   However, this position requires flexibility to be assigned any shift A , B or C that may be required due to production needs and to cover the Formulation responsibilities.  Other duties may be assigned by supervisor as business needs arise. 


    The Individual

    • A minimum of an Associate degree in Chemistry/Biology or related sciences field is required.
    • A Bachelors Degree in Chemistry/Biology, Medical Technology or related sciences field is preferred.
    • A minimum of 1 year experience in a lab environment is required.
    • Basic understanding of laboratory skills and techniques (weighing, pipette use, volumetric measure, etc) are required.
    • Familiarity with safe chemical and biological handling required. 
    • Good understanding of basic algebra, basic statistics, and basic laboratory data evaluation & interpretation preferred.
    • Familiarity with aseptic technique and biological handling techniques desired.
    • Strong understanding of metric units and how to convert between scales (i.e. g to kg to mg) preferred. 
    • Basic computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, data entry) will be required.
    • Large batch formulation experience, knowledge of clinical chemistry, and basic knowledge of tool usage (pliers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.) are preferred. 
    • Ability to use and follow SOPs to set up complex equipment (i.e.: Ultra-filtration equipment).is required.  
    • Dependability and strong organizational skills required.
    • Ability to work independently and in a logical manner to meet deadlines and schedules is preferred.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are desired. 
    • Work visa sponsorship is not available for this position

    This position will require the ability to lift up to 45lbs and use a man powered forklift for lifting up to 100lbs. This position will require to work B shift (3PM to 11:00PM) or another shift as assigned. Overtime, weekends and holidays, as needed by business, will be required.  Ability to be flexible to changes in the work schedule is required.  This position will be based in Rochester, NY.
